Dog Days Are Over

Florence and the Machine‘s debut album is set to be released on the 6th of July, but in order to make the remaining dog days go a little faster I thought that the current single would be ample food for thought.  Anything which begins with the enticing strumming of a ukelele is, quite frankly, worth further exploration, particularly when this is quickly supplemented by sultry (if largely unintelligible) female vocals, handclaps, and enthusiastic tambourining.  At the risk of being swept away on an uncommon wave of enthusiasm, I found myself dragged back in the teeth of the lyrics; Florence certainly wasn’t lying when she said that “happiness, hit her like a train on a track”.  Whilst I remain unsure as to whether the approaching horses are actually apocalyptic, I do feel that the song is marching in that direction and is uneasily appeased only by the omniscience of the ukelele.
